TECHNICAL PRODUCT MANAGER for DIGITAL MEMORIAL PROJECT

ALMA: A community memorial honoring the victims of femicide in Mexico. Our goal is to build a multimedia, interactive tool that makes for a more impactful way of engaging people in the fight against gender violence in Mexico.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
ALMA - A Community Memorial - is a multi-layered project being developed to empower women in Mexico who have been impacted by the epidemic of murder, disappearance and abuse. In light of this violence, which experts have estimated kills approximately 10 women every day, we seek to give voice to the families and allies of victims. Our project is informed by resilience, joy, and deep collaboration with impacted communities.

The project includes:

  • A digital memorial taking the form of a multimedia platform whose goal is to humanize the epidemic by celebrating and memorializing the life and legacy of women-identifying victims. Our goal is to tell the stories in a way that honors the victims and steers viewers towards achievable actions and advocacy. This project will be led by two Product Managers - one UX & Design PM (Marina Garcia Vasquez) - and the other a Technical Product Manager to focus on the software / technical development side. The digital memorial platform has received a Seed Grant from the Brown Institute for Media Innovation through Columbia University and is being technically advised by Jorge Flores from Entidad.io.

The team is seeking someone for the Technical Product Manager role for the digital memorial in a part-time contractor capacity that will run for three months and could result in further work if further funding is secured.

ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Digital Memorial Technical Product Manager (TPM) will work with the project leaders and the Memorial UI & Design PM to:

  • Map and develop the initial project design document with engineering components

  • Assess and recommend available technologies, tools, platforms and services required for design, development, rollout and maintenance of the digital memorial

  • Develop and recommend technical team roles required to design, develop, rollout and maintain digital memorial (team structure development, not actual staffing recommendations)

  • Develop a budget required to execute the digital memorial

  • Develop a schedule to execute the digital memorial

The above tasks are expected to be completed within a 3-month period and the TPM role will be funded through this period after which the development materials will be used to seek additional funding. The TPM may be asked to participate/consult on the next grant application cycle.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience creating, launching, and maintaining multimedia platforms from the ground up (project requirements definition, team, schedule & budget development, design, testing and validation, go live and maintenance)

  • Technical familiarity with latest industry technologies, standards, and tools

  • Collaborative and able jump in and produce with a new team quickly

  • Flexible and capable of managing multiple project stakeholders concurrently

  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic with demonstrated creative and critical thinking capabilities

  • Skillfully manage rapid development cycles; flexible and calm in the face of uncertainty and/or ambiguity

  • Cooperative and able to fit in well with a team, understand capabilities and priorities while fostering a team environment.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in software and technical development (either through education or experience) and has been a member of cross functional teams, working directly with UX & Business Strategy stakeholders in developing high impact, new tech multimedia platforms. A strong interest and passion in tech for social justice is ideal.

Good examples of the type of platform we are trying to build are:

  1. Story Maps

  2. Nos Van A Ver Juntas

  3. Mapbox

  4. The New York Times 2020 Election Campaign Map (this with narrative integration would be ideal)

These examples are only meant as a starting point to illustrate some of the technical complexity and features of what we believe the Digital Memorial will require. Our goal is to build a multimedia, interactive tool that makes for a more impactful way of engaging people in the fight against gender violence in Mexico.
